Visit to Sri Shakthi Senior citizens home

Spandana the outreach programme has begun its activities for the current academic year on a grand note with the visitation to the senior citizens home. The students of I NON-CET batch were taken to Sri Shakthi Senior citizens home as part of their Spandana outreach programme on the 6 th of July 2023. There were about 58 students who interacted with the inmates of the house. There were about 60 inmates, the senior citizens who are either thrown out of their house or have none to take care of them.

The programme was undertaken to drive home the lesson of including the excluded. It is also one of the four apostolic priorities of the Society of Jesus. The students learnt the need to take care of the senior citizens in the families. They interacted with the seniors and got to know their various issues. The humanity dies in front of the consumerist values where money and property has more value than the human beings.

We spent about two hours interacting with the inmates and spent time listening to their struggle sand stories. They all felt happy about our visit and made them feel that we are one human family. The students felt really enriched with the interaction they had with inmate and got to know about the cruelty with which the world is operating. We also interacted the in charge persons there and exchanged information about their timetable, food, facilities, governmental help etc.

The valuable time spent with senior citizens at the ashram has left the students speechless. They saw how those people long to see their children and grand children. All learnt a lesson about not forsaking their parents at any moment.

Students responses:

- I learnt that in this people operate on the grounds of money and property. The parents become secondary when it comes to wealth. I was hurt to see the old age people waiting for their children to visit and see them. I learnt a lesson that we must not abandon our parents at any cost.
- I felt both happy and sad at the same time. I was happy because the people in the ashram were happy to see us and sad because how their children disserted them. Parents are in the place of God and we must never hurt them. But today because of money and property children don’t bother to take care of their parents. I learnt a lesson never to ill-treat my parents.
- We need to grow in the quality of humanitarian feelings. Arrogance and superior feeling is never a good attitude for humans. Today a lot of elderly people are suffering because of the arrogance of their children. The parents work hard to bring up their children and hence the children have the responsibility to take care of the children at their old age. Ashrama can not keep the aged people happy.
- I was happy to meet the elderly people at the ashram. They treated us like their grand children with much affection and love. I also felt sad for them because they long to go back to their family. The love they experience among their family members they don’t get in the ashram. Hence et is important fro everyone of the students to learn a lesson of taking care of the family members when they grow old.
